Dr. Dominic Kitavi Delivers a Public Lecture at De La Salle University, Philippines

Dr. Dominic Kitavi, Chairman, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, delivered a public lecture titled “Understanding the Link Between Helicobacter pylori and Stomach Cancer: A Mathematical Perspective” at the College of Computer Studies, De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. In his lecture, Dr. Kitavi showcased the use of advanced mathematical models to analyze the transmission dynamics of H. pylori and its progression to stomach cancer. 
Dr. Kitavi emphasized the critical role of treatment interventions and environmental factors in influencing disease spread. This research forms part of an ongoing study being undertaken by Dr. Kitavi and his PhD student, Ms. Glory Kawira.
This exclusive invitation to deliver the public lecture underscores Dr. Kitavi's international reputation and highlights the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration.

 

 

On Saturday, March 15, 2025, the University successfully organized a Mathematics Contest and Capacity Building Workshop for high school students particularly form three and form four students. The contest attracted participation from twenty-nine (29) secondary schools, bringing together a total of six hundred and twenty-nine (629) students, who were accompanied by fifty-five (55) teachers.

Nyangwa Boys Secondary School emerged as the overall winner with an outstanding Grand Mean score of 21.87 out of 50. The best Male Student in Form Four & Overall Best in Form Four was Collins Murimi from Nyangwa Boys Secondary School.
The best Female Student in Form Three was Miriam Wawira from Mariari Girls Secondary School.

2ND UoEM ANNUAL MATHEMATICS CONTEST AND CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP HELD ON SATURDAY 16TH MARCH, 2024
University of Embu organized the 2nd Annual Mathematics Contest and Capacity Building Workshop for the High School students on Saturday 16th March, 2024. The main objective of the event was to offer an avenue for learners to showcase their prowess in mathematics and boost their confidence in it, hence simulating love and enthusiasm for the subject. The Contest was officially opened by Prof. Jackson Wachira who represented the Vice Chancellor during the event.



During the closing ceremony, the best schools and students were awarded. The first prize overall was bagged by Nyangwa Boys High School, Kangaru Boys High School bagged the second position, and the third position was bagged by Kangaru Girls High School. The organizing team led by Dr. Dominic Kitavi thanked the participants and invited guests for finding time to attend the contest.


Overall, a total of twenty-nine (29) secondary schools graced the occasion bringing together a total of six hundred and eighty-nine (689) students accompanied by sixty-five (65) teachers which was a large number in comparison with the previous contest held on 25th March 2023. The event helped the students in identifying their capabilities and motivated them to learn and expand their
knowledge. The contest enhanced the inquisitiveness of the students thereby building confidence, mental prowess, and learning at the same time.

The students thanked the university for giving them a chance to showcase their prowess in the subject and boost their confidence in mathematics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics organized a career talk seminar on March 1st, 2024, at Auditorium 01, for the fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Computing and Bachelor of Science in Statistics students. The primary focus of the seminar was to enhance the students’ marketability and branding for potential job opportunities. The session included mentorship on various aspects such as exploring job areas, effective job applications, workplace etiquette, writing CV’s and cover letters, and interview readiness. In attendance were 10 members of departmental staff, along with 55 BSc. Statistics and 86 BSc. Mathematics with Computing students.

The seminar featured two facilitators, namely Mr. Edwin Sindiga, a Data analyst specializing in profiling at the Intelligence and Strategic Operations Department of the Kenya Revenue Authority, and Dr. Hezron Mogaka, a seasoned lecturer at the University of Embu, with extensive experience in both state and non-state agencies, as well as international organizations.

Mr. Sindiga addressed the students on: Building relationship with lecturers, Pro-activeness and aggressiveness, Job application strategy, developing specialized skills, work-life balance and professionalism, Job opportunities and networking, generosity and social engagement, and Goal Setting and Commitment.
