Dr. Dominic Kitavi Shares Practical Lessons on Building Meaningful Research

The Advanced Research Institute for Informatics, Computing and Networking (AdRIC) of De La Salle University (DLSU) hosted a hybrid lecture on August 3, 2026, featuring Dr. Dominic Kitavi, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Embu, Kenya, and Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow at DLSU.

Entitled “Developing High-Impact Research: A Case Study in Statistical Signal Processing,” the seminar provided practical insights into developing research that is rigorous, relevant, and meaningful. Dr. Kitavi emphasized that impactful research goes beyond producing publications; it should address important problems, generate useful knowledge, and provide contributions that others can build upon.

Using a case study in statistical signal processing, Dr. Kitavi demonstrated how researchers can move from identifying a real-world problem and reviewing existing literature to defining research gaps, developing focused research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, conducting validation, and communicating findings effectively.

He also highlighted key characteristics of high-impact research, including novelty, rigor, significance, reproducibility, practical relevance, and generalizability. Participants gained practical guidance on developing research ideas, designing meaningful numerical experiments, writing and revising manuscripts, selecting appropriate journals, and navigating the peer-review process.

The seminar concluded with an important reminder that high-impact research is developed through curiosity, critical thinking, rigorous methodology, persistence, and effective communication. The session provided graduate students and researchers with valuable lessons applicable not only to statistical signal processing but also to research across various disciplines.
