Short Biography
Dr. David Musyoka Kinyili is a Lecturer of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Embu, Kenya. He has extensive expertise in mathematical modelling, infectious disease dynamics, mathematical biology, and computational applied mathematics. He holds a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Applied Mathematics from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (2024–2025) and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa (2021–2023). His doctoral research focused on Mathematical Modeling of COVID-19 and Impact Analysis of Selected Control Measures. He also earned an MSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Embu (2019) and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Biology (First Class Honours) from the same institution in 2017.
Dr. Kinyili’s research seeks to develop and analyze mathematical models that address complex public health and socio-economic challenges. His areas of specialization include mathematical modelling, infectious disease epidemiology, mathematical biology, stochastic modelling, public health dynamics, computational mathematics, and data-driven decision support systems. His current research interests extend to COVID-19 and post-COVID conditions, cancer and gastric ulcer dynamics, unemployment modelling, corruption dynamics, health interventions, and emerging applications of mathematics in sustainable development. His scholarly contributions have resulted in numerous publications in internationally recognized journals, including PLOS ONE, Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering, Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences, AIMS Public Health, Computation, and Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences.
A recipient of several prestigious awards and competitive research grants, Dr. Kinyili was awarded the NRF-South Africa Grantholder-Linked Postdoctoral Fellowship and Staff Development Grant (2024) to support his postdoctoral research at the University of the Witwatersrand. He also received the highly competitive DAAD In-Region PhD Scholarship (2020) to pursue doctoral studies at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), hosted by the University of the Western Cape, and earlier secured a University of Embu Postgraduate Scholarship (2017) for his master’s studies.
Beyond research and teaching, Dr. Kinyili actively contributes to academic leadership and curriculum development. He has served as Acting Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, a member of the Board of Postgraduate Studies, a curriculum review and development committee member, and a lead developer of academic programmes at the University of Embu. He is currently supervising PhD candidates and Master’s students, reflecting his commitment to mentorship and capacity building in the mathematical sciences. Through teaching, research, supervision, and international collaboration, Dr. Kinyili continues to advance the application of mathematics in solving contemporary societal challenges while contributing to the growth of scientific scholarship in Africa and beyond.
